Back to basics.

Today I feel the need for a little reminder. What you see below was not served up in a restaurant but could very well have been, especially as I've seen a lot worse get plonked on the table. As fancy as it might look, you're looking at a very simple meal. This means two things.

First, if the food you're served in a restaurant doesn't look like restaurant food, i.e. it's uninspiring, unimpressive and the sort of thing you could do with your eyes closed for a lot less money, then stop wasting your money on mediocre shit and eat in better quality, (and therefore probably more expensive), restaurants less often.

The maths goes like this, work out how much you spend eating out in the average month and spend the same money in less restaurants. Yes, this will mean cooking for yourself more often and if that's an issue then have a word with yourself.

The other thing I want to mention is that it takes a lot less effort and skill than you'd imagine to produce food that I'd be happy for you to spend money on in a restaurant, (this is the best benchmark). A lot of the time it's more to do with presentation than with cooking ability. The only cooked item I've got on the plate above is scrambled eggs, everything else is scattered, draped or drizzled around to make it look special.

So here's the skinny. Save your energy and stress, just make something simple and dress it up all fancy like. Be careful though because as your cooking gets better with all the extra practice, you might find yourself eating in some very fancy restaurants as the bar gets raised.
Remember, from now on before you go out to eat, ask yourself what would I be happy for you to eat?
