Quality trumps convenience
A while ago I suggested that the best way to eat out was less frequently. But I'm not a monster, I still want you to enjoy yourself so here's the plan; instead of spending a bit of your money on shit food from lots of cheap food outlets, spend a lot of your money on better food from a few good restaurants. I was reminded of this while wandering around the Isle of Wight.
For some reason there was a hijacking. On holiday is normally the time when I let what's left of my hair down, culinarily speaking, and blow out a bit. This morning we decided to head out early for a walk on the other side of the island, (to beat the crowds), then have breakfast. It's a very pretty place and after a gorgeous drive through twisting, enchanted, country roads, we enjoyed stunning views of England's south coast on one side and the Channel on the other. An excellent start to the day. However, my appetite got sabotaged and I wasn't hungry. Until suddenly I was, by which time it was lunch.
Having found Trip advisor to be an easy guide, we found a place to go. One look at the ramshackle shed selling sandwiches by the beach and I was heading away and a bit further upmarket. The next couple of places were slightly better but I couldn't face the impending disappointment so off we went.
There was a restaurant with rooms very near our accommodation which was recommended and had looked like it was worth a punt when we'd passed it yesterday. It wasn't cheap and the menu hinted that there my be proper chefs in the kitchen so in we went. A bit of judicious interrogation of the helpful, friendly staff guided me towards the fish and chips. Fresh fish, (not frozen and defrosted), being battered to order was
the clue for me.
I'd love to tell you it was a great meal but all I can manage is better than average. Considering the price though, I'd drop that to average. I'll not go into details, but basically, though I held out for a better place, it still wasn't amazing. I may be lucky enough to be able to turn out better food than I get in most restaurants but I urge you to raise the standard you're willing to pay for so you end up buying quality instead of convenience.
The picture was taken as we went to Tesco to pick up some supplies. I've never seen this at the entrance to a supermarket and I was pleasantly surprised. Have you ever seen this before? I'd be shocked if the Isle of Wight is the only place they do this.
Do let me know.
