Random Moaning.
As an aside before I get into today’s missive, I realised that another way to think about eating healthy is to not eat unhealthy. That may sound daft, (You’re telling me. –Ed.), but before you get me dragged off for the public's safety, here’s where I’m coming from.
For some people, choosing the healthy option is the easiest way to go but for others, avoiding the unhealthy one is easier. If you think it adds up to the same thing, I absolutely agree with you but if you’ve not thought about it before it may offer a useful solution. Upon reflection, there’s very little chance that you have thought about this, (Well done for working that out. -Ed), but it may offer a different perspective. Anyway, on with the show…
The picture above is an illustration of so many things that get me frothing with anger. Firstly, green, crunchy bananas are just horrific. I know people get used to ripening them at home but I've met too many people who prefer their bananas on the green side of yellow instead of brown. Show me one self-respecting gorilla who would happily eat a green banana and I'll eat my words but I think you'll struggle.
Next up, and on a slightly more subtle note, this illustrates the reason that supermarkets aren't the best place to buy fruit and veg. Their supply chain is so long that they are geared up to have as little wastage as possible and this means stocking and stacking produce that has a long shelf life. In other words, it's a long way from ripe, like those bananas.
My local green grocers buys his stock from the market daily so the stuff on his shelves is mostly only a day or two from the day it was picked up from the wholesalers. The only exceptions are things like onions, carrots and potatoes which have a longer shelf life. It may not be as convenient but if you have the time, make the effort to get fresher fruit and veg.
Come back tomorrow when I'll tell you about a couple of my favourite toys. If I remember.
