Who asked you?
My advice has been sought by a lovely lady who has a business in Finchley that sells mainly, but definitely not only, falafels. I have to mention them first as they are, quite simply, phenomenal. She, (her name is Simi), is a passionate cook who was asked to do some catering. Word of mouth spread and she ended up taking a premises to open up her offering of catering and street food lunches, (to eat in or take away) to a bigger audience.
You can probably guess from the mention of falafel that the style is middle eastern. She's from Israel originally but has lived here for years and it's clear that she couldn't be much happier than she is, sharing the food that comes so naturally. So what does she need me for?
Simi wants to grow the business and as she has not got any experience in the restaurant trade, a mutual friend put us together. I'm coming to the end of my first week looking over her shoulder. There are no spoilers as to what needs to be done, I'll tell you about that later, but what I can tell you is that it's worth a visit and for a fairly unique reason.
Of course the food is great and very authentic, but what makes it special is that this is a small business powered by the owner and her passion for cooking. You'll only find the food you'd find being served up for her friends and family, as well as the genuine warm welcome they would expect to receive. There are not many businesses like this any more and I'm going to do all I can to support the venture. Like giving it a massive plug.
The place is called Falafel Feast and can be found at 377 Regents Park Road, N3, just near Finchley Central tube. Or there's this, www.falafelfeast.co.uk. Being a bit ditsy meant my well organised plan to take a pic of the place got forgotten as I was leaving, so instead you're looking at what the boss pulled out of the oven when I was falafeling. Now go visit the place. You have been told!
