In the beginning there was nothing...

...but that was a long time ago and since then we've been filling our lives with all sorts of crap. Remember the last time you moved house and how it took a lot longer to pack everything up because there was all those little extras at the end you hadn't accounted for? There's something similar going on in your kitchen.

Yesterday, plans got changed and suddenly I wasn't going out. This meant eating had to be taken care of. Before I had got my head round the situation I heard the usual battle cry of, 'There's no food in the house. What about an Indian take away?'
No food in the house? Are you out of your mind?
While it was true that the fridge looked barer than usual, there were a few veg lurking in the drawer and an onion to keep them company. Like a steam train leaving the station in your favourite western, the wheels slowly started to turn and momentum gathered. The next stop was the back of the cupboard where I remembered I'd left an opened packet of noodles. The journey was getting underway.

To cut to the chase, what you see above is what I cobbled together from a kitchen that apparently didn't have any food in it. Satay noodles with a veg stir fry and an egg on top. (Homemade satay, none of the ready made nonsense). While it may not have the finesse of other dishes I've posted pictures of here it was tasty, balanced, cheap and fairly healthy.

I challenge you to have a rummage around the back of your cupboards for any half used packets of anything that you're so used to coming across that you don't even see them any more, and seeing if you can put them to good use. Start by pulling them out so they don't end up squatting there for another twenty years or until you move house again.
