A taste of things to come

Travel stories first as I've spent the day getting to Corfu. Alarm at three. Crept out of the house, onto a bike and one hour and fifteen later I had locked the bike and was past security and looking at the duty free offering in Gatwick north. A new personal record.

As I got there earlier than expected, I had a mooch instead of heading straight to the gate, before suddenly realising I may not have as much time as I thought, so off I dashed. The route is a familiar one but what was less familiar was the sight awaiting me at the gate. You can see it below and it caused me to ask if the plane had left already. No sir, you're the first. Freaky!

Once aboard I discovered that just because we'd done Easter a week ago, it didn't mean the schools were back. I couldn't have been more surrounded by children if I'd broken into a creche. Fortunately, due to the insanely early hour, once we were in the air even the most disgruntled, whinging infant fell asleep. But enough of that, you didn't tune in to read a travel blog.
Wait for me!
Yesterday you heard that while I'm here I'm going to be giving this high fat, low carb diet a go. As good an idea as this seemed, the only information I had was high fat, low carb. I could kind of guess what else was expected but research was needed, so since unpacking my toothbrush I've consulted the oracle.

The results of my preliminary investigation is that I can eat green vegetables until I turn green, as much meat and eggs as I want as well as all the olive oil I can drink. However, legumes are not the same as nuts so peanuts in moderation but other nuts better. Most fruit in moderation too as they contain sugar but grains and especially gluten are to be avoided. There's more to it but that's the headlines.

While I'm quite happy with the theory of all this, there is an element of eye rolling. The bloke who came up with this, William Banting, was around at the end of the seventeen hundreds and if you look up Banting diet you'll find lots more about it. However, and this is where my eyes roll, it's also the paleo diet. I had a brush with this a while ago and it sounded bonkers. What I've realised is that it was the folk raving about it that were bonkers. Anyway, I'm over that now and the experiment is underway, starting with me going shopping for some greens.
