Laundry day

The idea of rolling up your sleeves to separate out piles of clothes, do numerous washes and then dry, fold and iron them probably doesn't fill you with excited anticipation. That's what I'm going to assume anyway, which means my next task might be a bit of an uphill battle.

As I roasted and blitzed hazelnuts to make nut butter and as I refilled my olive oil bottles and as I gear up for a marathon chopping session to make kimchi, I thought about how I often didn't even notice these tasks being done or the difference they make but how important they are to making cooking even easier.

As someone who has some OCD tendencies, I find there's a therapeutic, and even Zen element to this sort of behaviour, on top of which the discipline of doing so is so deeply ingrained that to not be doing it would be like trying to give up the laborious and time consuming task of breathing.

Now the salesman gets unleashed. How about any of these tasks are not chores but something else? What that something else is depends on you. It could be a meditative practice, as I find chopping a huge mound of vegetables or something akin to a time filling but mundane video game like tetris or candy crush but with a practical outcome.

Being a bit cynical, (And why not? -Ed.), there's a nagging sense that the marketing noise from the food industry has contributed to the overall idea that cooking is the worst kind of drudge imaginable and we should give them our money instead of possibly discovering that there are joys to be had in the preparation of deliciousness.
