On the horizon
As the end of this phase of the low cab high fat diet starts to hove into view, preparations are underway for the next. Before I give you details of that, there's other LCHF news. Following my ongoing bits of research, I'm starting to get a bit of a sense of the other side of the coin.
As with any type of diet, there are bound to be all sorts of claims and cashing in going on and one in particular is that LCHF is a bit of a cure all. From what I've read this seems most doubtful. A lot of other folk have adopted LCHF as a route to weight loss which, judging by my experience, certainly seems irrefutable. However, there are concerns that being in a state of ketosis -brought on by restricting carb intake to less than 50-70 grams of carbs per day- for the long term, can be damaging. I'm not sure exactly how, why or what possible damage is caused but that news comes as something of a relief. And I'll tell you why.
Eat your greens, and reds.
As someone who loves food and eating, the idea of denying myself four fifths of all ingredients forever seems a bit harsh. This is one of the reasons I've shaped the next phase of the experiment the way I have. The plan is to alternate between LCHF for two weeks and my regular healthy lifestyle for one week.
I'm guessing that this will give me access to the benefits of LCHF without chance of doing myself too much mischief and reducing the madness of eating like a maniac for one weekend to satisfy my cravings. The end of this phase is in a week so next weekend will be the start of the first week of regular healthy. Roll on hummus!
One reason I fear that the LCHF lifestyle can be damaging long term is that, in a similar way to when people adopt other extreme diets like a raw vegan diet, it has not been well researched enough and folk just aren't equipped with the knowledge of how to cook, feed and nourish themselves properly. It certainly feels like I've been eating healthily for the last few weeks, let's see what I feel like with adding a few carbs back into the mix.
