Brain food

Going for a drink last night was utterly remarkable. Not because It has been months since I last went to a pub, and that was probably only cos I needed the loo, but because of the conversation I had. If the rumours are to be believed, most pub chats involve some version of, 'putting the world to rights' and accompany many pints. None of that happened lat night.

Within thirty seconds of arriving and finding the -at this point quite small- group, I was talking to an enthusiastic, articulate neuroscientist. The same one who got a mention in a recent mail, if you read this quite regularly, and that was my evening taken of.

You'll have to imagine the singing.
What I hadn't appreciated up until this point was that this is not a field of study that exists in isolation. To be of any use, neuroscientists have to very clued up in all sorts of other subjects like physics, chemistry and of course biology. The best analogy for how the conversation went is that the computer on my shoulders was suddenly connected to the computer network and massive database of (insert name of impressive university research department here) and I could ask any question I wanted. Yee-haa!

However, my computer was a Comodore 64 using a dial up modem and had a lot of trouble keeping up with the onslaught of information and the storage thereof. I'd like to think I've retained the highlights but I do remember having a load of revelations, a lot of them biology, food and health related. Quite amazing.

There's always a bit of fallout following a night at the pub. On this occasion, today has been spent trying to make sense of the treasure trove of information and ideas that got passed my way. Fortunately, a lot of this is very relevant to everything that gets written here so you're going to benefit too. Which is nice. Come back tomorrow and I'll tell you about tonight's impromptu supper.
