False advertising

Re yesterday, the best part of frying an egg on a motorbike tyre is that the tyre is oil based so there was no need to add any butter to stop it sticking. However, as you saw, there needs to be a lot more heat in the tyre or it doesn't cook the egg. Sure, I could have done scrambled instead of fried but who ever said, 'it's hot enough to scramble an egg on'?

The next time I give it a try I'll need to find someone who is about to change their tyre so the won't give a toss about wearing it out getting it really hot. It would be good to have someone who will eat the egg too or it's a bit of a waste. But enough hooligan cooking and on to something a bit more practical.

The picture above is of a butcher's window advertising fancy chicken. For years I always thought how exotic it was to have corn fed chicken until something occurred to me, chickens don't eat corn. Well, yes they do if you feed it to them but that's not their natural diet.

A chicken, as I don't need to remind you unless you're under eighteen and you've never been out of a city, is a bird. Their natural diet is varied and comes from rooting around peking at whatever they can get including a variety of grains, worms and insects. Feeding them corn will fatten them up and turn their flesh yellow but otherwise doesn't really have any advantages that I can work out.

This is an example of a subtle type of manipulation and is a great reminder that you should stay awake when you're out shopping. The other way it happens is when you see things like fat free sugar or sugar free butter. Even better, you can follow the advice of Michael Pollan and just not buy any food that has any marketing or advertising.
Next week, meat free broccoli and diet lettuce.
