Prehistoric conspiracies.

You're absolutely right, I was going to talk about something more practical and you may not think this counts, but one of the other things that I find a touch boggling is how our ancestors managed to eat a balanced diet.

We need fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and water from our food. Not only that but we need all the vitamins, of which there are sixteen, or we get ill as well as minerals, even though we only need them in tiny amounts.

Just because it was an amazing view.
The body can synthesise some not all so our diet is important and this is where things get weird. Though we had no idea about this thousands of years ago, it looks like we were able to compensate when our diet would have been lacking. Broadly speaking, there were three dominant grains, wheat, rice and corn. The east had rice, the old world had wheat and the americas had corn. But the protein in corn is lacking a couple of essential amino acids so something had to be done. We ate beans. Beans contain the missing amino acids but how did we know?

In sub-saharan Africa and the americas, some animal fats were missing so we ate avocados or coconut palms but was this just luck? I know I left you yesterday in the middle of a question and you're in grave danger of exactly the same happening again but it just seems incredible to me. And before you write in, no, I don't think there's some fiendish conspiracy. I might just have to go off and do a lot of research.

There is the possibility that I'm just being slow and the truth is that we had a very varied diet, (which we know to be true), and these foods were the ones we unwittingly used to supplement our diets. (Sounds plausible to me. -Ed).

Funnily, for those amongst us who have decided to cut certain types of foods out of their diets, it is super important that they do their research. Many of them read a blog by a svelte, lycra-clad hottie with a fantastic story about how cutting out *insert random food group here* saved their lives and suddenly they're not eating a regular diet but they are doing all sorts of damage.
Come back tomorrow when it's going to be Tuesday.
