Thoroughly misjudged
Thanks to my spies, news has reached me, (as it may have reached you seeing as it's all over the national press) of the latest rib tickler from those hilarious folk in the supermarket's marketing departments, specifically M&S and Sainsbury's. A number of customers were alerted to the latest gaffe and took to social media to spread the word.
Before I spill the beans, what makes this an excellent subject for today's post is that it's relevant to my ongoing promotion of roasted veg so, in true supermarket style, it's time for a two for one offer. What have they been up to? Offensively overpriced and over packaged cauliflower.
The offending items are cauliflower steaks and are being sold in plastic wrapped trays with a little sachet of sauce for nearly (and you might need to sit down for this or bite something to stop you screaming) eight times the kilo price! Like I said, the complaints being reported are for high price and excessive plastic wrapping but I have an extra one; unnecessary dumbing down of cooking.
As long as you're allowed to use a knife, you're perfectly capable of producing this dish without their help or giving these gits outrageous amounts of money. Basically, to make your own cauliflower steaks, take a cauliflower, (which normally costs no more than a pound) and slice it like a loaf of bread. (Yes, it really is that simple). You can normally get four steaks from the middle of a big cauliflower and you get some bits left over to make something else with.
Oil a baking tray and put the steaks on it. Now you get to be a cook as you drizzle or sprinkle the cauliflower with whatever you fancy. Don't be shy but if you're unsure you can make a mix of ingredients in a bowl and taste it before you pour it over. Put the tray in the oven at about 175c for about ten or fifteen minutes then turn it over, adding a bit more sauce if you fancy. Give it another ten to fifteen minutes, depending how thick you cut it, and it should be done.
It could be the main element or an accompaniment. You could serve with a poached egg or two, maybe a piece of fish or even a chickpea stew. I just had the idea to pour a cheese sauce over the top then grill it with some grated cheese for a roasted cauliflower cheese. You heard it here first!
