Entering the unknown
Though there are no complaints, I'm off to run some errands in Corfu. I'll be gone a couple of weeks and to make sure my time there is as unenjoyable as possible I'm setting myself a challenge. I'd even go as far as to say this is for your benefit as well so listen up and see what you think.
Thanks to the eagle eyed observations of the Oxford Scoggis, a podcast recently crossed my path about a South African professor who was also a runner. He's in his sixties now but was getting qualified at the time when there was growing wisdom about the practice of carb loading for distance runners. He authored a book which became a bible for many runners and practiced what he preached for many years.
But then another book came out.
He was so incensed by the review that he went off and read it. Two hours in he realised he'd been wrong and that carbs weren't the way to go. Carbs aren't the only food that gives us energy, fat does that job too. We were all so bamboozled by the assertions from the fifties that fat was bad that everyone stayed away, including him. But then he totally changed his diet and his view.
This has got him in some pretty deep water but he has stuck by his guns and I guess that lead to the podcast which brings me back to the point of this. As I've been pretty slack recently I thought I'd use my time away to get back on track both with a bit of much needed exercise and reigning in on some of my recent culinary excesses before my clothes stop fitting.
The experiment I'll be doing will be neither torture, (you might be disappointed to hear) nor require a ton of self-discipline. The idea is to eat a high fat, low carb diet. I'll not be going as extreme as he did but I'll certainly be making some changes that will require me to pay close attention so I stay on track. No doubt I'll be sending you updates so stay tuned and if you're interested there's a link below.
