You're on your own

One of the things that dug a groove for itself in my already overcrowded brain was a picture of nutrition. Before this stream of words continues to pour onto the screen, I suddenly realised that the thousand words which make up the value of the aforementioned picture are lying in a jumbled pile in the corner. Oh well, you're used to this sort of thing by now so let's just get on with it.

What does nutrition mean? Though the answer might seem obvious, it turns out there's a lot to it. We know that to stay alive, one of the things we need to do is eat. We have also heard that the best thing to eat is food. The chances are that you also got the memo saying that food is nutritious and that nutritious is good. But what does all this mean?
A large pile of stir fried nutrients.
In short, I don't know. I'm definitely no biologist, so don't whatever you do don't take a word of this as hard truth but instead, this is a description of the picture that I keep mentioning and with any luck it will motivate you to do a bit or research of your own. One reason I'm suggesting this is because I'm doing exactly the same, loads of research.

Because there's so much to learn, you may find different aspects of it of interest to me but for now, here's a snapshot to whet your appetite, (metaphorically speaking). When food is eaten it must be absorbed, sorted into its useful components (nutrients), which are assimilated and put to use. These nutrients help the body carry out its ongoing functions such as maintenance, growth, reproduction, general health and fighting disease. What isn't used is disposed of along with other waste.

Nutrients fall into six groups; water, vitamins, minerals, proteins, fat and carbohydrates. There's another group, fibre, but was we don't assimilate fibre, it's not technically nutritious. However, fibre is super important as it feeds our gut bacteria so some folk class it as a nutrient but I'm not going to argue the point. That's enough for now. I might return to this at some point but hopefully you're going to head off and do some research of your own. Let me know what you find out.
